How do we control and monitor Rapid Recovery?

At installation the Rapid Recovery administrator console software (called DS-User) is installed on as many or as few workstations as required and will require a valid logon, ensuring no unauthorized access. The DS-User acts as your interface with Rapid Recovery(DS-Client application) and enables the configuration of all backups and restores.

Is the software installed on any other machines?

The Rapid Recovery software is totally agentless, requiring no additional software to be installed on any machines to enable backup; be it Windows W2K, 2003, XP, SQL or Exchange, Linux, Unix . (some add-on features such as "message level restore" for Outlook may require a small agent to reside on the target computer)

If Rapid Recovery is agentless, how does it access our data?

From the DS-User (administration console) when a new backup set is created you must provide a username and password to connect to that server or workstation. Rapid Recovery integrates with all Windows domains, Trusts and Novell NDS trees.

Do we need to create a user for Rapid Recovery on all our servers?

No, but a dedicated user is recommended and it should be set for no password expiry for obvious reasons. In a domain, or NDS environment, a user on each machine isn’t necessary as one central user can be created with access to all the resources that require backing up.

What access permissions does this user require?

This user (administrator) is responsible for backing up and restoring all the data on your network, it is essential that access permissions are of administrative equivalence. Rapid Recovery can only backup data that this user can access. A less privileged user may be restricted, causing data to be missed.

How is the (optional) DS-Client Application Server connected to our network?

The DS-Client Server is ‘multihomed’, i.e. it has only one network connection to your network and one connection to ebackup’s network. This flexible approach allows the Rapid Recovery software to integrate fully with your current IP/IPX configurations.

Who installs the Rapid Recovery DS-Client Application?

Network Administrators usually install the Client Application on a computer/Server in their network along with the DS-User (administrator console software). If required, ebackup's online support team can assist and install the application remotely, also providing necessary training to get the application running smoothly. The initial set up/support charges include online support for the installation, software configuration, creation of a number of backup sets, and a specified number of future pre-paid support hours, based on 1/4 hour increments. (see support pricing) If the installation is particularly complex or remote sites are involved, additional time for that site support is available at online support rates.

How is the first backup done, given that there will be a lot of data?

For large data volumes, the initial backup may be done to a portable unit, backing up at LAN speeds to a large disk volume. When the full backup of your data is complete, it is shipped to ebackup’s data centre where it is copied to the vault. Incremental backups can then begin from the client site where they are synchronized with the initial backup and then continue with a normal backup process thereafter.
