Achieving Backup Success

While progress has been made in the corporate world as to the recognized importance of effective data management, there is still some confusion over the importance of implementation of efficient backup strategies. As a result, few companies do backup well, causing an alarming regularity of failures.

As with nearly everything in business, proper preparation can mean the difference between success and failure. The critical preparatory steps in ensuring backup success include:

          1. Look at backup from a business perspective and prioritize data and back it up according to its business value.

          2. Evaluate your current setup to improve efficiency.

          3. Evaluate technologies such as near-line backup (NLB), virtual tape libraries (VTL), continuous data protection (CDP) and commonality factoring, which can help improve backup.

In fact, according to industry analysts, such as those at Enterprise Strategy Group, backup remains one of the largest challenges many companies face from year to year.  Common complaints point to the length of time required to backup or the lack of proper verification. It is estimated that about 20% of backup jobs are unsuccessful; a figure not difficult to explain.

Backup Challenges

As an increasingly electronic workforce grapples with swiftly evolving regulations mandating data retention, corporations are backing up more data every year. Concurrently, workers grow more intolerant of any application downtime.

In an age of near instant data access, it is a common assumption that data will be backed up with zero application impact and will be able to be restored just as quickly. This leaves corporate IT managers with the difficult task of attempting to squeeze more and more data into an increasingly small window of time for backup. Not surprising then, that so many companies have a hard time doing it well.

A Light Ahead

There are signs, however, that improvements are being made for those whose task it is to craft successful backup strategies. An industry wide move toward disk-based backup technology is an important step forward. New technologies can then be melded with management-based tactics that assign backup the priority it increasingly deserves. An operational checklist can further improve the likelihood of backup success:

          1. Ensure the current setup is operating at top efficiency.

          2. Backup all the right business data, prioritizing by value.

          3. Determine procedures for efficient backup verification.
