The Disaster Recovery Priority

Summarizing economic activity in the past few years as ‘a notable downturn,’ might certainly be considered an understatement by some. Some Business owners and executives are finding that it is incumbent on each of them to go through the necessary belt-tightening and budget reassessment processes whenever economic conditions and the stock market take a turn in the southerly direction.

There are the obvious areas they turn the scythe to first - staff, marketing, accounting, HR, legal, customer support, and ultimately IT. In light of increased IT investments in recent years, this area often finds itself on a fiscal chopping block. It's standard practice to cut infrastructure costs, defer a new web initiative, or stretch out the additional hires for a few months but, before anyone gets carried away, be sure to spare the backup and recovery team. In fact, when things take a turn for the worse, business managers may wish to consider increasing the backup and recovery budget, and here’s why.

Information and data are some of the most critical assets in a modern business. Lost data is traditionally considered irreplaceable. Here are a few examples to stress this point; would you or anyone on your management team (following a data loss or disaster) be able to answer the following questions:

          • What is our outstanding accounts receivable, and who owes us what?

          • What is our outstanding accounts payable, and to whom do we owe what?

          • What do all our employees make and what are their deductions? If we outsource payroll, does our payroll company have data backup?

          • What about all our customer contact information and detailed purchasing details? Are they in our CRM system or at least in Act or Outlook? Were they backed up?

If there are problems answering any of these questions, you may need to re-evaluate your fiscal prioritization policy. Remember, you can replace desks, computers, supplies, inventory, and even people, but data is irreplaceable and its loss could put you out of business.
